Is travel even important right now?

Is travel even important right now?

2020 has been a tumultuous year so far to say the least, first with the pandemic and then the unrest and social anxiety that has flared up in the past few weeks.

As such the conversations that are ongoing are serious ones with real impact on our lives - how should our societies operate? How will we keep ourselves and our communities safe? What will our cities, towns, workplaces, relationships look like after this?

I think all of it has been emotionally and intellectually challenging because these are questions and situations that pull our attention to the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy of Needs - physiological, safety, love & belonging; the collective 'we' has been shaken on all of these fronts and needs attending to.

Previewing Ireland + an interview with FLY Travel Radio

Greetings from Thailand!

I made just a short video this week with a preview of our webinar about a 2021 adventure through Ireland, and a brief bit about my recent interview with FLY Travel Radio, where we discussed what lockdown is like in Southeast Asia, the travel adaptations we may need to consider in the future, why flying will be our biggest obstacle, and the importance of continuing to dream about travel:

Things mentioned in the video:

In Culturally Complicated Crete, Greece Dances Through

This old-town harbour at Chania is, at first glance, deeply confusing.

I’ve spent the last few days travelling west across Crete from its administrative capital, Heraklion, and since I came from a week in the nearby Cyclades islands, the landscape has been much as I expected: dry, rolling mountainsides, dotted with chalk-white villages, descending to a piercingly blue sea, under a sky without a single cloud in it.

Battle Of The Atlantic Shore: Smuggling and Wrecking On Cornwall’s Coast

Battle Of The Atlantic Shore: Smuggling and Wrecking On Cornwall’s Coast

If you’re hunting for one word that defines England’s Cornwall (the most southwesterly of its 48 counties), “coast” is a good bet. There’s nowhere in Cornwall that’s more than 35 km from the sea - and even without including its Isles of Scilly, it has the longest coastline in England (over 1,000 km in total).

Nowadays, it’s a landscape for breathing in the sea air, listening to the gulls squabbling overhead and the waves thundering at the base of the cliffs you’re standing on, and feeling your blood pressure dropping lower every minute.
